New private cloud platform helps engineers and builders operate faster

West Australian IT provider CMTG has developed a locally built and managed private cloud platform designed for engineering and construction firms, who are under growing pressure to deliver complex projects faster.

Unlike public cloud environments, which rely on shared resources, internet-only connectivity and weaker security systems, CMTG’s private cloud is purpose-built for engineers and builders often working with large 3D models and under strict compliance obligations.

The result is faster processing and smoother graphics performance for construction specific software such as computer-aided design (CAD), building information modelling (BIM) and simulation software.

“Our private cloud solution operates at a much higher performance level than what’s currently available in the public space,” CMTG Managing Director Carl Filpo said.

“We use the latest Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) EPYC central processing units and NVIDIA graphics processing units (GPUs), guaranteeing dedicated resources for every client.

“This next generation of technology ensures predictable performance that public clouds can’t always provide.”

The private cloud also enables consistent access across multiple sites and devices, allowing engineering teams to securely log on from home or a project site while experiencing the same high-performance as their office desktop.

CMTG’s new platform is hosted across two Perth-based data centres, and clients can connect using private circuits or dark fibre – a faster, more secure alternative to public internet access.

“By developing our infrastructure to be multi-homed across two data centre locations, with multiple internet and data links, our clients benefit from both performance and reliability,” Carl said.

“All client data remains securely housed in Western Australia, eliminating the uncertainty of international data transfer and ensuring compliance with Australian data regulations, not to mention peace of mind for our clients and theirs.”

When Dynapumps – a Perth-founded and headquartered, globally operating pump engineering solutions company – encountered increasing performance and compliance demands across key applications, the team turned to CMTG for support.

“We’ve always had confidence in CMTG’s performance and flexibility after many years working together,” Chief Operating Officer Dynapumps Iain Torrance said.

“But their significant upgrade to EPYC CPU’s has delivered a noticeable step change for our users.”

Iain said Dynapump’s solution engineers had seen major performance improvements since CMTG deployed the latest generation of EPYC CPU’s and NVIDIA GPU’s.

“The feedback has been that the system is ‘smooth like butter’ and even our partner vendors were impressed when they saw their engineering software running via a CMTG virtual desktop instance,” he said.

“At the same time, power is nothing without control.

“CMTG’s continued investment in multilayered data protection – including backups, immutable snapshots and ransomware detection across their two geographically diverse Perth datacentres – gives us genuine peace of mind and helps us meet the ever-increasing security compliance requirements of our customers.”

Carl added that many engineering firms had historically assumed private cloud wasn’t an option, often because software vendors or IT integrators told them otherwise.

“That’s simply not the case, reinforced when software vendors have seen our platform and confirmed it’s fully compatible with their systems,” he said.

As the engineering sector adopts emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), digital twins and Internet of Things (IoT), CMTG’s private cloud provides a secure and scalable foundation for innovation.

“Public AI systems often require pushing sensitive project data into external environments,” Carl said.

“Our private cloud gives businesses the flexibility to explore AI and automation while keeping their data within Western Australia and under their control.”

With few local providers offering the same high-end, sovereign infrastructure, CMTG is setting a new benchmark for engineering cloud performance in Western Australia.

“When engineering firms see the performance and control our platform provides, the decision to adopt will become an easy one,” Carl said.

“We’re delivering the reliability and responsiveness they’ve been asking for – locally, securely, and without compromise.”
